Although this is the first tutorial following the Virtual Voice Lab Series introduction, the first tutorials were recorded and posted several months ago.

Install Call Manager 4.x with VMWare

How to install Call Manager 6.x in VMWare

These videos walked through the installation of Call Manager, but nothing more. Before I release a post on how to register phones to the virtual lab, we need to enable the services on the CUCM system and remove dependency on dns.

For the past several days, I have immersed myself in everything Gatekeeper. As I had stated early on, IPIPGW and Gatekeepers have been a weak area for me due to the fact that I have never come across a need to deploy one for a customer. When studying for my CCVP and my CCIE voice written exam, I had studied the theory and “lab’d” up some basic configurations, but Gatekeepers have always been an intimidating beast to me, until now!

Started the weekend off with an 8 hour rack session from CCBootcamp. I had previously purchased several sessions and have decided to use these and save most of my Proctor Labs sessions for when I work through IPexpert’s workbooks Volumes 2 and 3. I spent the first 30 minutes or so making all the Basic Infrastructure Design configurations such as creating vlans, configuring ntp, windows and IOS dhcp, the vg248, and getting phones registered.

Is it possible to build a voice lab without actual hardware? The answer is yes and no. You can build a very good lab using GNS3 and VMWare but it is not possible to build a complete lab. The underlying emulation engine for GNS3 (dynamips) does not support digital signal processors (dsps) or voice cards.

Over the next few months, I will show you how to build a very good lab without any hardware. If you want a more complete lab, you will need to obtain at least one router with dsps and voice cards. I have a 2611XM router with DSPs, a vic-2fxs card, a vic-2fxo card and an ATA-186.
