Throughout this year, I have posted several tutorials on dynamips and dynagen. I have never really had  a reason to try anything different, basically because dynagen just works. However, because of a request a few weeks ago, I branched out and tried GNS3.

We all know dynamips is a great tool for creating virtual networks and testing router configurations.  However, I can never seem to really understand a concept unless I use it in a "real" scenario. I will show you how  I have started using dynamips as my personal internet router.

This tutorial will show you how to add a tap interface to your linux machine and how to communicate with your dynamips router session via the tap interface. In a previous tutorial, I used a loopback interface on a Windows XP machine to accomplish the same goal.

When using dynagen and dynamips, the application used for console access is normally basic telnet. Personally, I do not like the windows telnet application at all. It does not allow logging or the ability to maximize the window.

Dynamips router emulation software is capable of emulating 2691, 3620, 3640, 3660, 3725, 3745, and 7206 series hardware. During this tutorial, I will show you how to use different IOS images with a 3640 example.

This video tutorial takes the previous three tutorials and ties them all together to create a virtual WAN right on your PC. When you are finished with this tutorial traffic will flow from your PC’s loopback interface, through router R1, through the T1, through router R2, out the NIC on your PC, to the ethernet LAN and out to the internet.
