This tutorial is part 3 in a series of basic Dynamips tutorials. This particular tutorial demonstrates dynagen’s ability to create a virtual switch that allows your virtual routers to communicate with a PC via a loopback interface.
Part 1: Dynagen Installation

I think i’m going to fall in love with this Dynamips emulator, because it emulates real cisco ioses. I think is better for anyone learning CCNA or CCNP in using this dynamips emulator than using Boson simulation and Visual Network simulators in the long run. I just hope that my PC P-4 2.4 Ghz with 2G of ram can handle more than a few of these virtual equipments in a network with no problem. If it does I’m going to love it. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

hello,
What application do you use to make these tutorials made in?
Great tutorials by the way.
April 8th, 2007 at 10:08 pm
Can you create a video scenario using Dynamips (virtual routers) communicating with a real cisco router that connect to your pc? Thank you in advance.
April 8th, 2007 at 10:47 pm
Follow this tutorial:
http://www.blindhog.net/cisco-dynamips-virtual-wan-with-ethernet-connection/
It shows you how to configure a dynamips virtual router to communicate with the local ethernet network through the PC’s NIC. If you configure your virtual router in this way, it should be able to communicate with a real router.

My loopback in Vista is not working, this makes it worse because the configuration for the switch will not be complete. When I run the Network device list, this is the output with loopback created
Network device list:
PCAP: unable to find device list (No interfaces found! Make sure libpcap/WinPcap is properly installed on the local machine.)
Use as follows:
F0/0 = NIO_gen_eth:\Device\NPF_{…}
Press any key to continue . . .
Can you help with this?

Joe

Keep up the brilliant work, really this helped me alot in understanding and configuring real cisco equipments.
I want to learn how to configure AAA server using dynamips running on my local machine can i do so???

I do not see any configuration image for 3660 routers. Config should looks something like this…
[localhost]
[[3660]]
[[router R2]]
[[router R3]]
model=3660
F0/0=NIO_gen_eth:\Device\NPF_{4A187DDC-2F10-4516-93BD-DA656E54BE33}
It also does not look like a Loopback adapter has been installed on the Workstation.
August 19th, 2007 at 4:50 pm
I included all the details in the config.
This is how my actual config looks like -
[localhost]
[[3660]]

# On Linux / Unix use forward slashes:
# image = /opt/7200-images/c7200-jk9o3s-mz.124-7a.image
# npe = npe-400
ram = 128
confreg = 0×2102

F0/0=NIO_gen_eth:\Device\NPF_{4A187DDC-2F10-4516-93BD-DA656E54BE33}
I installed the loopback adapter too. This is the address I got from device list.

Can I add a second loopback interface and connect to R2 like you do with R1?
September 4th, 2007 at 3:26 pm
I’ve never tried it…try it and let us know what you find out. I have always used the live network to connect to R2.
September 6th, 2007 at 5:13 am
I did all the steps and worked. But when I was repeating the test, I saw that I configured by mistake the network connection with the ip (192.168.200.1) instead of the loopback. When I configured the loopback, it didn’t work anymore. I couldn’t ping the router. If I configure the network connection, it works. Which mistake could I have done?
Thanks.

Yes, it’s work. If u have any problem, restart the computer and the second loopback interface will be up!

@Dan
I have not installed Vista yet. I converted my home machine from a pirated version of XP to Ubuntu 7.10 and so far, I have been very happy. I don’t have plans of purchasing or pirating Vista.
My work PC is still XP and I don’t have a good reason to upgrade. Once I get a chance to use Vista, I am sure I will post tutorials for using Dynamips with Microsoft Vista.
If someone would like to send me a legal copy of Vista, I will get tutorials out sooner.
October 28th, 2007 at 10:40 pm
@Ivan
Have you started the dynamips host batch process before using dynagen?

Connecting dynamips routers with loopback interfaces in windows 2000 dosn’t work !!
I work around this problem by installing vmware, connecting the virtual router with vmnet1 and bridging the loopback interface with vmnet1

Hello!
Thanks for your sharing knowledge about Loopback configuration for Dynamips!
But, when I look into Loopback Properties, I see that it works only onto speed of 10 Mbps!
How can I increase the Loopback Speed up to 100Mbps like in the FastEthernet medium!!!
Thanks you very much!

Thanks Josh.
I will be investigate for E1 interface.
I hope new dynamips for support voice cards.

I am a new user to GSN3. I have installed GSN3 new version on windows XP. I have also added the IOS image to GSN3.
I am unable to get the console of the router. when I give command on GSN3 Console R0 the telnet screen comes with a message telnet to loaclhost….. and goes away.
I ahve configured it as per the settings on this bolg http://www.subnettingmadeeasy.blogspot.com/
Can any one please suggest what I SHOULD DO TO RECTIFY IT and establish the telnet session.

To those who are using Vista.
I have encountered the same problem before.
I can’t find the Microsoft Loopback Adapter using the “Network Device List.cmd”
Luckily I have the solution (that works for me):
1. Click your Start Button
2. type in cmd.exe
3. Right click on the result
4. Click run as administrator
(Yes, there are some process that won’t run correctly unless you are an admin)
5. Go to the dynamips folder
C:\> cd “Program Files\Dynamips”
6. Run the Network Device List.cmd
7. (Just in case it didn’t work) Reboot
8. Try again from step 1
Good luck

Hi,
I am facing trouble to bring my Virtual router up with Dynamips. I follow your video and do exactly you said there.
I am pasting “basic-router.net” file for you and a snap shot from the Dynamips console panel.

Only difference that I have is instead of an image file having “.image” extension, I do have a image file having “.bin” extension. I am not sure that this is the problem or not. Need your help mr. Admin.

mansur, I see two possible mistakes
1) you are missing a c: in the path of your router image
2) you are trying to console into the router before it is started. Try ‘start R1′ before attempting to connect to it.

Hi Josh,
Thanks for your reply.
I added “C:” to my image path. I am not clear about your second point. I did start “dynamips-start.cmd” or dynamips before executing my “basic-router.net” file.
But having same problem

Hi, I’m having problem integrating with win2000. I have used physical interface to bind with a virtual interface of the R1. But can’t ping the router from the host machine. Surprisingly, I can ping the router from any other device in the LAN, except the host win2000 machine.
Any idea please?

Mijan,
Not sure. I haven’t used win2000 in a long time…

Your problem is the windows firewall. Disable it and you should be able to communicate from the router to the PC.

Hello all,
Problems with vista are down to windows firewall and the ACL settings in control pannel under user accounts (that crap popup thingy)…

Not sure what’s going on, but when I set up the loopback GNS3 works great. However, nothing else does. The PC can’t access the real internet. When I do a ping or traceroute, I see it trying to go out the loopback interface. Any ideas on how to fix that?

Hi
I am working with GNS3 . Today I hit the export from file column file > export .
But after that I could not configure even one router ,because it says ” HYPERVISOR IS ALREADY RUNNIG ON PORT 7200″ . I addressed this with manual hypervisor. but can you tell me how to do something to ignore that anoying message and still work from port 7200the , same as before ? I mean is there any thing to delete or … ?
thank so much.

I was able to set up a Windows VPN using XP home. However it is not terribly reliable. I would recommend a product/service called Hamachi from a Log Me In Inc. It is an excellent zero configuration VPN, free for home use but they do charge for commercial use. I use their remote control product, Logmein, extensively. It too is free and an excellent remote control product. Hope this helps.
