GNS3 is not able to open saved projects (.net file)

I recently upgraded my lab machine from Ubuntu 8.10 to 9.04. After the upgrade, I noticed GNS3 was not able to open saved projects. I tried several different things before I finally uninstalled GNS3 using the Synaptic Package Manager and installed it manually from the GNS3 website. Below is a video to walk you through the steps.

It worked for me, and I did not need to use “gksudo” on the launcher.
Thanks!

Hey everyone!
I have recently installed the Ubuntu v9.04 on my machine. I have a folder with the GNS3 installation for the operating system and at the moment I’m kinda struggling to install this GNS3.
Any advice??

Hi – 1st thanks for a great site with lots of tips.
I have tried following your instructions but after creating a launcher for GNS the program doesn’t launch at all.
If i insert gksudo in the launcher it asks for the sudo pass which i input but then no GNS.
I have worked around it by just installing GNS via software sources and then opening the net file using open with option but i’d like to know what i am doing wrong as far as getting the other install working?

If you followed the instructions closely and are still having problems; try clearing the configuration ini file (edit-preferences-general ). As soon as I did this , everything started working properly.

This is why I avoid GNS3… it’s poorly made and has a lot of flaws. I learned the hard way that “wr mem” doesn’t save my router configs… 6 hours of work down the tubes. That was the last time I used GNS3.

All;
Sorry I have not responded to comments in a long time.
Glen,
Yes, GNS3 can be opened without the gksudo command in the launcher. I use it because root access is required to connect GNS3 to a physical interface on the Linux box.
Robin,
I assume you have this working by now. However, for others reading the comments…the problem could be with your path statement in the launcher.
Sam,
Thanks for sharing your experience.
Chris,
Yes, GNS3 has its flaws.

A similar problem with the Linux version of GNS3 is due to a software bug that occurs only when using 3740 router images. Saves appear to work, but the config files for the virtual routers are empty. As a result, I use 2600 and 3640 images.

I am also having the same problem as Robin. I have followed the instructions twice now. I double click on the launcher and nothing happens. I even double clicked on the gns3 program in my home directory. Nothing is opening. Any ideas.
thanks in advance….
