How to install Call Manager 6.x in VMWare
Posted by Josh on Thu 20 Mar 2008Categories: Cisco , Cisco VOIP , virtualization - [379] Comments
In a previous tutorial, you learned how to install Call Manager 4.x in vmware. Installing CUCM 6.x in VMWare is much easier. Cisco did a great job with CUCM 6.x in terms of allowing you to install the software in a virtual machine without needing to hack the system.
There are not really any tricks to installing Cisco Communications Manager 6.x in VMWare. I have used vmware player with easyvmx.com as well as VMWare Server.
Update: This is not mentioned in the video, but I have noticed very strange issues when using a SCSI hard drive for CUCM. A SCSI hard drive is created by default. You will need to delete the SCSI hard drive, create a new hard drive and select IDE.
Here are the basic steps:
- Create a virtual machine with your favorite VMWare Product
- Configure the virtual machine with enough disk space and RAM to meet CUCM installation requirements
- Insert your CUCM 6.x installation CD
- Complete the Installation Wizard
- Wait for the install to complete
Check out Cisco Call Manager books at Amazon.com.

Obvious question: Where can one get the CUCM ISO?
March 21st, 2008 at 7:46 am
If you have the CDs, you can create an ISO from the CDs with LC ISOCreator
If you do not have the CDs, you might search the following websites

Hi Josh,
G-R-E-A-T Video. Serves the need for N-O-W!!!
Anyways, I tried to install it on VMWare Player on a Ubuntu Host without any luck. So I had to settle for VMWare Player on an XP Host.
Any reason why the Ubuntu install didn’t work?

Ayo,
If you are using a Linux Machine (Server or Desktop), I highly recommend VMWare Server 1.X. That is what I used for this video. The vmware server was on a Linux Box, but I was using the server client on my windows box.
I tried VMWare Server 2.X Beta … I am not real impressed … yet. I am sure they will make it a great product though. They always do.

I’ve got such a daft problem!
After following the procedure perfectly, I get to the localhost login: prompt and it will not accept my login or password specified during setup.
Which username and password pair does cucm use for initial login?
Im using v6.0.1.2000-4
thanks in advance!

Ibraheem,
There are not any other steps. You may have a little confusion regarding the vmware interface used. Make sure you are using the bridged interface.
Josh
March 26th, 2008 at 9:03 am
Phill,
It slips my mind, but it is configured during the installation. Either you configure the username or it is ccmadministrator.
I will look through some documentation and post another comment.

Ibrahim,
Try connecting to the local console. I only connected with the ip address and port number because I have a Linux VMWare server and I was connecting to it from my windows VMWare client.

I just finished upgrading our CM4.2(3)a to 6.1.1000 in a VMware environment. Unfortunatley all licences are lost (usually you should have 50 licences for free after install). Now i was able to get a valid licence file but the MAC addresses dont fit together. Does anyone know how to change the MAC addresses of the VM with VMware Server1.0.5? Or maybe there is a way to change it in the CUCM6.1?
April 29th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
DrM,
I have not been able to find a way to do this. I tried to figure it out with CUCM 5.x but was unsuccessful. Hopefully someone else has been able to do this.
Josh
May 5th, 2008 at 12:48 am
I was successful in changing the MAC address! lol
I did not patch VMware itself, i just hacked into the CUCM6 with a Linux LiveCD and spoofed the MAC with Linux (CUCM6 is based on a RedHat linux system) internal tools.
After that i was able to activate it with the lic file i had.
This should actually work for all kind of CUCM5+6 installations.

Thx a lot

Hi all,
I have CuCm 6.0.1 Business Edition up and going on an IBM Netserver 5500 M20 under VMware Server, it installed fine BUT its VERY VERY VERY slow – any suggestions, my hardware is a triple PIII with 2gb RAM – suppose I need more RAM but its expensive and the max is 4gb. Will spend the money if it will help!
Any comments ?
Thanks

Hi all,
I am having same issue as Dan. I get message “uncompressing Linux… Ok, booting the kernel” and the VM restarts. and same as Dan its a continious loop. I am using Vmware server 1.0.5 the VM is Redhat enterprise 3, with 80GB IDE HDD, 1GB RAM. Is it a hardware issue?
Josh, you have done a great job helping people setting up CCM. Can you please help us to resolve this issue.
Thanks in advance
May 19th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
@Chaachoo, Unfortunately, I have not ran into this issue yet. If anyone is willing to share a desktop with Logmein (or something similar), I would like to help fix it. – Josh
May 26th, 2008 at 1:02 am
Thanks Josh.
While trying to get more info on the issue I went through RedHat website, which describes same kind of problem that relates to SMP kernel. Can you please confirm CCM 6 uses SMP kernel or UP kernel.
I have uni-processor machine and some ppl had problem running RedHat on UP. They need to change the Grub. However in this case CCM only has one Grub entry.
I am in middle of my Uni exams. Once finish I’ll try using linux recovery CD to change Grub. Will also setup RDP to my desktop for Josh.
Regards,
Chaachoo
May 26th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
I solved the looping issue. I downloaded the super grub iso, booted the vmware from it and it fixed to boot partition (not sure of the lingo as i’m not a Linux guy).
Just google ‘super grub’.
Cheers

How do you perform a clean shutdown of Redhat through VMWare??
May 27th, 2008 at 4:16 am
Hallo DrM!
I’d like to change the MAC-Adress on my CUCM-machine with a linux live-CD.
Can you give me some infos how to do it?
thank you
May 28th, 2008 at 2:52 am
To be honest, i did not do it by myself. I am not one of these linux guys. Actually a colleague did the changes. As i said, we booted up the VM with a KnoppixLinuxLiveCD and then he mounted the disk where CUCM6 was installed on. With some hacking he was successful in adding a “ifconfig” command in one of the first scripts which get started during the CUCM bootup. For a linux guy this should be sufficient, for all others (like me) it is magic anyway.
June 3rd, 2008 at 2:05 am
Hello guys,
Thanks Tomique
So finally i was successfull to install CUCM6 on VMware. Problem was in iso DVD. When i tried to make installation with CUCM DVD obtained directly from “Cisco guy” everything run properly. But I have one problem during initial configuration. When i check services center-feature service in Cisco Serviceability the Service “Call Manager” always goes to “not running” status, active status is activated. I already tried to turn off and on service, but service after few seconds switch to not running mode and i have no idea why ? If anybody have any suggestion, please share it with us or me
June 4th, 2008 at 5:25 am
@Tomiqe34
This sounds like a licence problem. Did you do a (naked) standard installation or upgrade?
A basic installation gives you 50 licences for testing purpose. For upgrade you need to get official licence files.
June 5th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Hi DrM,
so i dont know, where was an problem… But the “new problem” came
Yes, i did a naked installation not upgrade. I know that Cisco provides an “starting DLU´s” (Data license units) in CUCM 6.0. I made a brand new installation of CM6 and service “CallManager” is uptime yet
When i want to add an Cisco IP Communicator or any Cisco SCCP IP Phone to VMWare CM on display during start appear follows: “Register Rejected:Error DBConfig”..I have read on some forum, that problem is with wrong configuration of IP Phones in CM, problem with database etc. But Im not able to find a problem yet because the “IP Phones adding procedure in CM passed without problems”… Any suggestions ? Thanks a lot

Hi to the author Mr. Josh,
Thank you very for such a wonderful and knoledgable videos, you have shared and available on annonymous people wanted to learn, Mr. Josh, can i ask were i or we can obtain the CUCM license? cause i got now license for free demo
once again thank you very much
June 5th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
I mean I got no license for a free demo, as you have in the video, where can we have it, i appreciate your possitive advice…
June 6th, 2008 at 7:40 am
@Johnathan – What version of CCM do you have installed? If it is 6.X, you will not need to upload license files, they are included. You may need to start the Call Manager Service via the Call Manager Serviceability page before it is usable. If it is 5.x, you will need to obtain a license file from Cisco. – Josh
June 15th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Anyone installed CUCM6.x with ESX 2.5.x? I tried using the vxnet NIC but the OS didn’t recognize it so I switched to VMLANCE which it did find.
I installed CUCMBE and it installed fine but I can’t log into the console, I even installed it twice and wrote down the user/pass and still can’t login…any ideas?
June 19th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Is there anyway to reset the CCMAdministrator password from the command line?
June 19th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Ok I was able to successfully install CUCMBE but I now get a GRUB error 17..any idead? my partition is 80GB.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Fixed it with this:
Grub error
After installation phase 1, the system reboots and you’ll probably get the following error:
GRUB Loading stage1.5.
GRUB loading, please wait…
Error 17
Don’t panic. It’s a known bug for GRUB. To fix it, you need a Linux bootable CD. I use RedHat Linux as example.
Step 1. Edit VM settings, so the CD-ROM pointing to RedHat installation CD 1.
Step 2. Start VM and have it boot from CD-ROM. I your VM was created with BusLogic SCSI, you need to manually install the driver. (That’s why I suggest LSI if you’re going to use RedHat CD)
Step 3. On the boot prompt, type ‘linux rescue’
Step 4. Follow the screen instructions to setup keyboard, language. You don’t need to setup network connection.
Step 5. On commad prompt, type ‘chroot /mnt/sysimage’, Enter.
Step 6. type ‘grub’, Enter
Step 7. type ‘root (hd0,0)’, Enter
Step 8. type ‘setup (hd0)’, Enter
Step 9. type ‘quit’, Enter
Step 10. type ‘exit’, Enter (type ‘exit’, Enter, again, if the system didn’t reboot)

I also have Callmanager 6.1.1 running on VMware server. The only problem I have is poor qudio streaming quality from the CallManager (e.g. with MoH, dialing an unreachable number). Has anybody experienced this and knows a solution? The poor audio quality wont do me a favor while demonstrating it to a customer icon_wink.gif Otherwise it seems to function normally, almost like the real thing.
Would be grateful for any replies! Maybe I’m doing something wrong?!?! icon_razz.gif
My VMware is configured with:
- running on Windows 2003 server x64, Hardware: AMD X2 4600+, 4GB RAM
- CM6 on Linux Red Hat Enterprise 3
- 2GB RAM
- 40GB HDD allocated (could this be the cause??)
- bridged network

@Chuck,
Use the ‘set password admin’ command from the CLI to change the administrator password. This is the password used for web and CLI access.
Use the ‘set password security’ command to change the password authenticating communications between servers.

I have experienced the same thing. However, I am not using it to Demo for customers, so I have never cared. This sparks my interest though. I will look around to see if I can find a solution.

Jack & Bruno,
I need to figure out a way to get the installation log from the server. I haven’t ever worked on a failed install before.
Can you both give me more information? What version of VMWare? The physical hardware…what version of Java do you have on your desktop?
Josh
June 24th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Hi Josh,
sure.
Version 1.0.5 build 80187 for VMWare.
40GB HDD and 1024MB for virtual proposes.
Java Runtime Environment 6.
I am behind a proxy…
When I open a blank page and put 10.11.7.83 (my address CUCM) it appears the begin page.
But, when I click in the !Cisco Unified Communications Manager Administration! the page is not opening…
Strange.
Thank you!
Regards,
Bruno.
June 24th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Bruno,
I would bet the problem is the proxy server. If the CUCM server is local, I would change the proxy settings to bypass the proxy when communicating with 10.11.7.83.
If it is not possible to access the CUCM server without going through a proxy … you are in a tough spot.
If you do not have rights to change proxy settings, you might download PortableFirefox and try to access it without proxy the proxy settings.

Hi Josh,
Here is the configuration:

Hi Josh,
problem solved.
It should be applied an exception in the proxy server for the IP address used 10.11.7.83.
It´s done!
Thank you for the good stuff.

I have installed CCM6 on VMware and find it very odd but when i inquire my licenses i have 10 000 licenses available – I have read arround and if i remember i had only 50 on previously installed systems. any idea which file contains the license so i dont have to waist 20 gig
July 2nd, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Excellent presentation Josh! One item to share that for others is to make sure that the Call Mgr instance in VM has access to a DNS server, and that foward and reverse entries exist for the hostname or else the install will balk.
July 6th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
I followed the video, however the installation fails right after i click “no” to check media. If I click “yes” it states the media failed. Any ideas?
thanks
July 7th, 2008 at 7:44 am
@pete …. bad media?
July 7th, 2008 at 8:07 am
@oracll3 – I am not sure. You could boot the server in ‘linux rescue’ mode from a redhat disk or follow this tutorial get a bash shell.
Once you have shell access, you could type the following to possibly find the license files….if they are held in the file system.
[server1]#find / | grep “\.lic”

Hi Josh,
I have installed CUCM 6 on the VMware workstation 6 but when i try to access it via windows xp desktop or try to ping the CUCM 6 server…the ping fails and i couldnt logon via explorer as well.
Are there any particular vmware network settings that should be in place? or if you could let me know what virtual adapters, dhcp, NAT settings you are using… i may try to copy it and make it work.
Any help will be appreciated.

Hi:
I am new to Cisco IPT. I tried installing The new Cisco 6.1 CUCM on my laptop via VMWare. I have 1GB memory and 30GB of hard drive space. I installed the Server version of Ubunti. I managed to get the CUCM CD working but it stops with an error stating that something cannot be partitioned. Anyone have idea what I am doing wrong?
Joseph.
August 3rd, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Finally got it to install on Workstation 4. No Hed Hat option so I used “Linux”
‘Basic’ install running VERY SLOOOWW. Found ALL Network Services running – None of the VoIP services activated. Trying to Activate CallManager and TFTP service yeilds error “could not contact License Manager” – It is running.
Any ideas?
Thanks
Richard
August 3rd, 2008 at 9:06 pm
Richard:
If I understand this well, you managed to install the Cisco CUCM software 6.1? How did you do that?
Joseph.
August 4th, 2008 at 5:17 pm
Well Joseph, It took 15 hours and 4 tries, but it did install and I could access CLI and WebGUI. As stated it was very slow.
Finally downloaded the latest ‘Server Evaluation Toolkit’ and was running CM 6.1 in 45 minutes. I even moved it to my laptop and am running it inside VM Player. It had to be the RH Enterprise 3 format that made the difference.
BTW – Anyone else that opts for DHCP at install, be sure to rename to something other than ‘localhost’ thru the CLI Command: utils set network hostname .
If you don’t you will never regiter a phone or access plugin apps like RTMT, because ‘localhost’ from outside the VM points back to the Host OS address.
Hope that helps someone else.
Great work Josh!
August 5th, 2008 at 7:38 am
Richard,
Thank you for this contribution! Great info.
I am interested in the ‘Server Evaluation Tookit’ … this is new to me. Is there a place CUCM can be downloaded for demo purposes?
Thanks again,
Josh
August 5th, 2008 at 3:54 pm
Hi Richard:
I am new to this, so let me repeat myself to make sure i am understanding this well. I could download Server Evaluation Toolkit’ for VMWare? Also, I need to choose RH Enterprise 3 to make it work better? So basically, Cisco CUCM is a linix based system?
Also, I do have the Cisco Software, but will I not need a license key or does it work for lab purposes of say up to 50 phones?
Joseph.
August 5th, 2008 at 10:17 pm
Josh,
The Server Eval Kit is from VMWare. From there I followed your instructions, except I chose DHCP because I will run this demo at many different sites. That’s where I hit the ‘hostname’ issue. Your tutorial is “spot on” for a static site.
Joe, yes VMWare Server is free from this link http://www.vmware.com/download/server/ .
Setting the initial VM as RHE3 seeems to make a BIG difference. The ‘Basic’ install gives you 1 CallManager Server and 50 DLU’s (Device License Units) which covers about 10 phones without advanced features like Mobility and Remote Destination.
Cisco continues to distance themselves from Microsoft, so if your career is IPT, you better get used to Linux NOW. Avaya is now Linux BTW.
Cheers,
Richard
August 6th, 2008 at 7:57 am
Richard – I see…I thought you were saying Cisco released an Eval version of CUCM for free…
Josh
August 7th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Josh, you are a legend. It worked fine but, I am having problems connecting from other laptops to the CCM admin page. I am able to browse to the page on the local machine and ping the CCM server IP address from the local machine. I cannot do the same from other nodes on the LAN. I have not deployed phones, but feel the phones when deployed will not be able to register. Is there any configuration that I need to carry out on the PC hosting the VMware server to make it accessible. Any solutions? Thanx.
August 19th, 2008 at 3:25 am
has anyone got callmanager working with vmware fusion yet? mine keeps crashing during the install.
August 19th, 2008 at 11:35 am
Hi, first off, the video rocks! Through it I was able to install CM6.01a on VM 1.04 on top of Win2k3 v64. I’m using the built in free 50 user/1 server license, and the install went great with no errors, but I have one problem. When I try to start the CM services, I get a failure to start Database error message. I’ve rebooted the CM instance (cli system restart), and restarted the VM instance, and even reinstalled the CM Pub, but still get the same error. I’m running this on an HP dc7550 on an AMD Athlon 64X2 Dual. Could the hardware platform be the issue or possibly the Win2k3 OS?
Thanks in advance for any feedback.
-Scooter

Correction on the hardware model, it is an HP dc5750.
August 22nd, 2008 at 9:32 pm
dg,
Thanks. The problem might have something to do with the vmware network interface connected to the cucm server. Are you using a bridged interface?
scooter,
I have not experienced this problem. Hopefully someone else will read the comment and have an answer for you.
Here are a few shots in the dark though…Do you have a 32 bit Host OS to try? Try installing CUCM with an IDE hard disk in vmware instead of scsi.

No problem installing UCM 6.01a in VMWare Fusion 2.0 beta here. Maybe try it if you’re using version 1.x. (Actually the status has gone from beta to RC now.)

Hi,
CCM6 install process does not finish successfully after 40 minutes.
Is there a specific vmware config file to setup before installing CCM 6 ?

Apenas aloque o HD com 80gb que dá tudo certo.
Tive todos os problemas acimas, quando deixei o HD com oitenta giga instalou certinho e acabou com meus problemas. Valeu Josh.!!!!

To shutdown the server, login to the text console and type “utils system shutdown”, then answer “yes”.

HI Thanks for your work, I am very excited to get this up and running, my install keeps breaking in the advanced stages, once it is doing post install installation it bombs out with an critical error and wants to dump to a flash, then it reboots and it does not start up again. not sure what I am doing wrong.

Hi, I try to install CUCM6.1 using guidance from you, but face this problem after i choose NO when Do you wish to perform media check? question come up.
the error messages is like this:
/usr/bin/anaconda: line 19: /mnt/source/Cisco/base_scripts/ilog2.sh: Input/output error
install exited abnormally
Any idea how to solve this problem? I’m using VMware workstation with 80GB allocated disk and 1GB memory.
September 23rd, 2008 at 9:10 pm
Taylor and Dylan,
You might try deleting the SCSI drive that VMWare creates when building a new virtual machine. Then, add an 80GB IDE drive before starting the CUCM install.
I have had the best luck with this setup.

I have the same problem as per the 6th comment.
Weird, as I have re installed it several times now, it never acepts my localhost login details.
I got 4.1 working on vmware quicker than this..
Anyone else experiance it/know the fix for it?
Cheers.
September 25th, 2008 at 1:44 pm
MrBlack,
I experienced this some time back, but my problem was that I was typing ccmadministrator as the username in the setup and then CCMAdministrator when I logged in … or something like that. The problem was that the username was case sensitive (if I remember correctly).

Will these instructions also work for Business Edition or do you need more memory and hard drive? I’ve got it installed but it is extreeeemly slow and doesn’t work well… setup using 80gb HD and 1GB memory.

I was trying to install CUCM 6.0.1 on VMWare Workstation(6), but was getting error “Security configuration failed (1)”. I tried several times, but each time i was getting the same error, i configured password correctly.. but no luck!!! could anyone please help!!! thanks in advance
October 9th, 2008 at 12:43 am
Cory,
I ran business edition on my workstation the same settings (80GB HD / 1GB RAM). You are absolutely right. It is painfully slow.
Giving an extra 500MB RAM really helped but I couldn’t use GNS3 or my XP virtual machine.
I guess the short answer for both of us is to get more RAM

Hi Josh. Mad props to your website & the time u’ve taken to help others.
I’m having an impossible time trying to figure this one out:
- running VMware Workstation 4.0.2 build 5592 (this shouldn’t be a problem right?)
- I do was your video instructed but am still puzzled what to enter for the IP address settings.
the IP address to my NIC is 192.168.1.5 with a gateway of 192.168.1.1 from my home router.
When I do a ipconfig:
IP address of VMnet1 is 192.168.148.1 /24 and no gateway configured.
IP address of VMnet8 is 192.168.159.1 /24 and no gateway
I did enable bridged network.
You mentioned something to Sunjay about:
“Make sure the virtual machine is on a bridged network and the ip address is in the same subnet as the PC you are trying to access it from. ”
So then my question is, should I set the IP to 192.168.1.99 with a gateway of 192.168.1.1 (the same as my home router??)
Is there any other variation if I used NAT or private network?
Puzzled,
Howie.
October 13th, 2008 at 11:05 am
Howie,
Thanks.
Try giving your CCM server something in the 192.168.1.X range … 192.168.1.99 would work just fine.
If your PC’s address is 192.168.1.5, then 192.168.1.99 is in the same range provided the subnet mask is 255.255.255.0. You can also use 192.168.1.1 as the default gateway.

I finally figured out why I coudlnd’t connect from my Host to the CCM on VMware. Believe it or not, I did your lab on installing the Bluephone prior so there was a microsoft loopback adapter attached.
Once I uninstalled the Loopback adapter, everything was fine.
Now I can connect to CCM but will I get errors once I install the loopback adapter back on?
http://www.blindhog.net/how-to-run-multiple-ip-blue-softphones-on-a-single-pc/
Fortunately, I do have a second NIC card attached. Hopefully I can bind it to that one instead of the one that is attached to 192.168.1.1

Hi, Brilliant tutorial BTW – thanks for the effort!
I have issues installing the CUCM6 environment using the VMWARE platform (I have VMWARE Workstation V6.5.0 Build 118166, but also tried it in the emulation 6.0 mode which looks exactly like the method supplied at http://www.blindhog.net/how-to-install-call-manager-6x-in-vmware/
I set all the parameters so that just prior to my build it looks as follows:
Name: CUCM6
Location: V:\CUCM6
Version: Workstation 6.0
Operating System: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
Hard Disk: 80Gb, Split
Memory: 1024MB
Network Adapter: Bridged
Otehr Devices: CD/DVD, USB COntroller, Sound Card
ave used this configuration many times, I have tried:
Keeping the username / password for every option where one is specified the same
Making all of the specified usernames / passwords combo’s different and recording then trying each
Using ccmadministrator for all username and password as ccm123ccm
Making the disk larger and smaller
Making the memory size larger and smaller (from 512Mb to 1.5Gb)
Changing the version of VMWare Workstation
Changing the network type from bridged to NAT etc
Making only base hardware available and trying all of the above again.
In my case nothing I attempt will work. I get this prompt and am stuck.
Cisco Unified Communications Manager 6.0.1.2000-4
localhost login:
I am unable to get to the machione from anything outside the VMWare hosting workstation, which is on a clean and brand new Windows XP install with only the VMWare Workstation on it.
Any help would be very welcome!
Thanks

terminaljunkie,
Are you able to login to the web gui?
Josh
October 15th, 2008 at 11:06 pm
No, not able to log in at all. I just booted into single user mode, and checked around. I can see the core O/S but no passwd entries for the ccmadministrator etc…but I’m not sure this should be there at all! The Ethernet NIC is not config’d either which I would have expected from the information supplied at config time.
Anyone been in this far and can describe what I should be seeing in terms of the environment? I will try and recover it and then document it for otehrs if I can make any headway.
Thanks!
October 16th, 2008 at 1:17 am
OK, wound back and did the install from a DVD rather than an ISO as it was too damn fast to see the output. Grabbed a snapshot of the last thing it does before rebooting. I get an error message which I screenshot in VMware, it says:
Disabling root account
* Warning – Error code 256 encountered running a kickstart %pre/%post script
* All kickstart %post script(s) have been run
* Moving (1) to step methodcomplete
* ejecting CD
Clearly it fails somewhere and then just carries on without any alert, probably in the account setup part looking at the first line.
Anyone any advice?
Cheers

How much space do you have configured for the virtual machine?

Hi Josh, thanks for your time and response. I am working at the moment (12 hour shifts) so I will try and get this posted up to you in the morning. My base config (above is)
Hard Disk: 80Gb, Split
Memory: 1024MB
Network Adapter: Bridged
Physically I have dual 2.4Ghx Xeon processors, 2Gb RAM and 40 Gb HDD (which I am spoofing as not pre-allocated as it seems to be the done thing) but awaiting delivery of a 200Gb plus Hard drive and another 2Gb RAM.
Will do the command tomorrow – unfamiliar with that command is this executed in single user mode or in a VMWARE window somehow?
Many thanks.

Josh, THANKS for this great site!
Hi terminaljunkie,
Previously i’m facing same problem with exact setup as you.
Version: Workstation 6.5.0
Operating System: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3
Hard Disk IDE: 80Gb, Split
Memory: 1024MB
Network Adapter: Bridged
Cisco Unified Communications Manager 6.0.1.2000-4
One error/difference (compared to video) noticed is initial login page should be ‘hostname’ instead of ‘localhost’ prompt.
I gave up and tried vmware server. CUCM6 was installed successfully. You may like to try server version instead.

I went into the same issue running VMWare ESX3, after looking into cisco’s forum I found this bug ID: CSCsd29245 that relates to some kind of DHCP error or something. I came out with a NIC theory because in my case I have a HP DL380 with 2 NIC’s and one is in use by the ESX install. I will try this night to configure the VM to have the second NIC assigned, with link an retry the install. This comment is copied from the cisco forum:
“Use static IP addresses for the CallManager servers. If static IP addresses are not possible, then make sure there is a DHCP server installed that the CM can find. Try to change the IP address and you can be able to continue the installation process”
Hope this helps.
October 22nd, 2008 at 5:45 am
I am using IDE, but tried SCSI first, also tried pre-allocating a 35Gb chunk of space, tried different usernames, in fact I think I tried combinations of everything I can think of. It actually takes longer to type in the information than it does to do the build, but always fails in the same place.
Baffled, but as ever, hopeful.
Still, unsure of the command you mentioned ‘utils service list’ is this executed in single user mode or in a VMWARE window somehow?

Anyone here can solve the issue of
” Security configuration failed” ?
I keep getting this error no matter how I tried. Can somebody help me in this matter please ?
I’m so close to the installation but yet so far. I need to up the call manager simulation for the integration test for my customer and it’s urgent.
October 23rd, 2008 at 7:52 am
Guys last night I honestly don’t know what exactly resolved the issue but I’m using static IP on my installation and the only difference yesterday was to check the VMnet, deleted the hole VDisk and NIC from the VM, added new ones and started all over. I got a different message when prompted to configure the Networking that stated that the gateway can’t be reached but at this point I don’t have the gateway for the subnet yet and ignored message to continue and then it finished successfully.
What I can sugest is to tweak with the VMNet settings to make it work, probably the problem is caused by poor networking on the VMNet or VMNet settings. Only guessing, I tried like 5 times before messing with VMNet.
October 23rd, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Terminaljunkie,
The ‘utils service list’ command is in the CUCM CLI. I didn’t realize your install was failing. I thought you were not able to login to the Web Page. Obviously, you won’t have this command if the install is completely failing.
Mike,
Can you post the ‘utils service list’ command?

Barak, Russel & Terminaljunkie,
The common theme here seems to be VMWare Workstation…
Try uninstalling VMWare Workstation temporarily and install VMWare player. Then use this file to create the virtual machine. (you may need to change the path of the iso image in the .vmx file if you are using an iso)

OK I installed Server version and it does an awful lot more installation work than the Workstation install did, still cannot login though, but it seems to be a different issue, I’ll look into that as well, it may be related to the machine I am using which is not a server but a workstation, and it did complain about the O/S when I installed.
Josh, I know you a busy, but if you do get a chance to upload that dead link:

October 29th, 2008 at 6:12 am
Not only a star, but you had it nailed – the VMWare Workstation version is not compatible with this Call Manager for some reason, the VMwarePlayer appears to work fine!
One question Josh (grovels) am I restricted in any way with this VMware Player version or is it a complete machine that I can use for CCVP?
Many thanks!
tj
October 29th, 2008 at 10:40 am
terminaljunkie,
That is Great! Glad to hear the player is working for you.
The only restriction I can think of is that you may not be able to run multiple VMs with the player but I have not tested that.
I only use VMWare Player with XP and I have only tried to run one machine at a time. I use Linux for most of my lab stuff and I use VMWare Server on Linux.
If you need to create more VMs for the player, you can use this post…

November 25th, 2008 at 10:41 am
Hi Josh, I am up and running well now and gradually making progress with the CUCM environment (it is huge).
I decided to remove the player and tried reinstalling the Workstation and it works fine that way – not sure at all what causes the glitch installing under VMWare WS6. But before I started doing any work I took a clone of my base build, and now want to try and use it as a 2nd CUCM server.
Question is, can this be done by changing settings in CUCM or should I just reinstall from scratch on another machine using the player and then clone that for DR purposes?
I am considering the CCIE Voice when I get through CCVP so all of your brilliant tutorials are being scrutinized for future effort!
Many thanks again for any input.

November 26th, 2008 at 6:54 am
terminaljunkie,
Thanks for sharing your progress.
You can use the base build as a second publisher server, but if you want it to be a subscriber, then you will need to set that during the install….where it asks if this is the first node int the cluster.

Try using an IDE hard drive instead of SCSI. You will have to delete the disk created by vmware server and add a new one to get the option to use IDE.

When I try to install Call manager 6.0 everything goes well until I reach the part where my network settings are checked. Then the installation stops and complains it can’t reach my default gateway. What default gateway address should I use?
December 13th, 2008 at 6:44 am
every time i install CM6 or CM5 the ccm website won’t work, i using Vmware V6, it installed perfectly and i can access the Linux CM platform, but when i browse to the website https://cmip/ccmadmin nothing is displayed, i mean this is not the first installation i have down.
it drives me crazy, please help.

well it works now, i think the problem was with the default gateway, since i entered one during the installation but i don’t have router, Linux wants to see a real gateway apparently!
Many Thanks for the video man good job.
December 15th, 2008 at 12:23 am
Michael & zwy,
If you are installing CUCM on a vmware workstation without a gateway, you might configure the ip address of the CUCM server as its own gateway… just a thought.

Trying to install on VMWare 3.x and get the localhost login prompt which doesn’t accept the username/password combo.
Oddly enough too, I can’t ping the CUCM virtual machine. Also when setting up the VM, there is no option for ‘bridged’, etc.
Changed the hostname of the ESX server (via network and hosts files).
Even changed the hostname of the CUCM linux install to match what I entered during CUCM install to no avail.
I still think it has something to do with VMWare ESX network settings.
December 18th, 2008 at 6:36 pm

Hi Josh and all, this is just to let you know that I had the issue of intial login, but I found the reason! Well the only issue is you need to specify the hardrive size, when starting the image wizard. I put the hardrive size 90GB, well in reality it does not use 90 GB, but when you put login name and password, Call manager checks the hardrive size, when I get the size less then it requires, then It gives error message. Also when you get successfull login and password, then you will be able to access via webpage as well with https://x.x.x.x/ address. I hope this infomration will be informative for you. Thanks

i FOLLOWED THE STEPS AND INSTALLATION SUSCCEFULL
BUT CANT LOGIN TO WEB PAGE , HOW TO SET ccM iP AND GATEWAY AND ip AND GATWAY OF MY pc
December 23rd, 2008 at 1:14 am
Hid,
I am not familiar with Polycom phones, however, CUCM does support some 3rd party SIP phones.
You will need to use vlans to separate voice and data traffic in order to use different dhcp servers. Or, you could just use one dhcp server and make sure option 150 is set.
The menus not working are most likely a browser issue.

Hi Josh,
A quick question, Can we have a call maanger 6 server to work as an NFS server as well.
I mean Can we configure NFS with the Call manager 6 on the same server ?
Thanks
Hid
December 31st, 2008 at 2:36 pm
Hid,
I guess you “could” but I am not sure why you would.
Anyways, I’ll leave you to your own reasons. You will need to login to the Call Manager server as root.
http://www.blindhog.net/how-to-get-root-access-on-call-manager-56-server/
The OS is basically Redhat Linux. I am not responsible for anything you break though

Hi Josh and all,
I had the same problem as some with the passwords not working on the CLI and the GUI would not load. The issue was as mentioned before, the default gateway configured was not online. For now i put the CUCM6 IP as the DGW and it works sweet. I am running it on (for now) a Thinkpad laptop with the virtual disc on a USB HDD.
Thanks Josh

Glad to hear you were able to get it to work!
I am not working on a Unity install. I personally hate Unity’s install.
I do have plans to work on Unity Connection though because it is on the CCIE voice 3.0 blueprint.

A quick question, how to enable G729 compression on the remote phones, does it have to be on the phones it self or from CM 6.
Also Can we configure Qos,Cos on CM 6, but I know on the switches, I am not sure about Qos on CM 6.

Hi Josh,
I tried to configure NFS with CM6, but according to the given instruction given by you in the above message, I have booted the my Linux with CenOS 5, and during wizard, I got an error message that Linux partition not found, so your system can not be mounted. I simply install call manager 6 on a vmware and all I need to configure NFS with CM 6.

has anybody managed to solve the “Security configuration failed (1)” issue during install?
I know the passwords are correct but I can not get past this stage.

Also I changed more more thing…
My PC’s IP address is 192.168.3.249 and when I put in the IP address for the first time on the server I used the same address, this time I went up one and used .250

Hi, Josh
I have one problem during initial configuration. When i check services center-feature service in Cisco Serviceability the Service “Call Manager” always goes to “not running” status, active status is activated. I already tried to turn off and on service, but service after few seconds switch to not running mode.
Thanks,

“”has anybody managed to solve the “Security configuration failed (1)” issue during install?”"
I see the posts asking the same thing, but don’t see a solution. I’m stuck at the very same step- (weird thing is I didn’t have this problem on a different setup I did- not sure what I’m doing wrong)
Appreciate in advance any/all help.

Josh,
Thank you for all the info you have posted. Browsing thru the queries I haven’t seen anything related to what I am running into. I have 2.3GHz CPU with 8GB RAM and 640GB HD. Host OS is Vista Home Premium 64. Trying to install CUCM 6.1(2) and I go thru entering userids/passwords and RHE3 installation. Toward the end I get a message: “The installation has encountered an unrecoverable internal error. For further assistance report the following information to your support provider.
/mnt/source/Cisco/base_scripts/ihardware.sh missing
The system will now halt”.
The install file is from an ISO.
Thanks.

That is new to me as well. Can you browse the CD from your Vista Workstation? Can you verify the ihardware.sh file in fact does exist?

January 19th, 2009 at 6:59 pm
yes it is.
January 19th, 2009 at 7:04 pm
As I am unfamiliar with Linux, does the path mnt/source/Cisco/base_scripts/ihardware.sh have anything to do with CD directory starting with Cisco/base_scripts/ihardware.sh?
January 19th, 2009 at 8:55 pm
John,
Yes, Cisco/base_scripts/ihardware.sh is probably the one it is looking for.
Not sure, but you might try using vmware server instead of vmware workstation (just to test). I have talked to others that have had issues with VMWare workstation.
Also, you might take a look at some of the comments above in the 130 and 140 range.

I’m planning to install CUCM 6.x tonight. At the moment I’m in the work. I can’t wait to test it. It looks simpler that CCM 4.x which took me too long to get it working xD.

Hi Fellas,
I did try installing the CUCM 6.x but if failed with following error message:
/usr/bin/anaconda: line 19: /mnt/source/Cisco/base_scripts/ilog2.sh: Input/output error
install exited abnormally
It´s the same issue that DC posted.
Josh, you told him to check the media. What do you mean with that?
I put the 80GB and 1G of RAM.
Please some help. I don´t know anything about Linux and starting to learn a little bit of it.
Thanks,
January 28th, 2009 at 7:18 am
Sephiroth,
During the first part of the installation, it asks if you would like to check the media. Most people skip the media check. I assume the VM is not getting a good read from the install disk (Input/Output error). Let me know if that is not the problem. Are you using an ISO or an actual disk?

Thanks

January 28th, 2009 at 5:19 pm
Hi Josh,
Ohhh that´s the media check part. I´m about to go to the College. I will try this tomorrow.
I´m using a ISO that I found at thepiratebay.
I´ll keep you informed Josh.
Thanks for the advice
January 28th, 2009 at 11:01 pm
Hi Josh and all,
I was desperately to test it that I tested tonight but no joy.
I tried to put the option “check the media” but the installation fails after configuring the root password so I never got that option.
It shows up “Bug error”(it displays a larger message) and prompts me to reboot the system. After rebooting, I got a black screen.
Is there any vmx file already created to see if mine is misconfigured?
Thanks,

Hi Josh
Beautiful Post.. As you said, i have installed VMware server. I have the ISO file of CUCM 6.0. I tried this in my home computer. I have a broad band connection.
The IP address is 192.168.1.10 and Default gateway:192.168.1.1. During installation i have given the IP address for CUCM as 192.168.1.9 and default gateway as 192.168.1.1.
The installation completed successfully. But the problem is when i opened a web browser and tried the application with 192.168.1.9. It failed to open..
Can you pl suggest me how to proceed?
Thanks

Hi, i have succeeded in running the CUCM 6 in VMWare. And I’m using Multiple IP Blue Phone as my IP Phone.
But I have a problem that the Phone Services (like Extension Mobility, IPMA, or other xml services) I installed for the IP Blue Phone doesn’t appear in the IP Blue Phone Services screen. But when I try using the Cisco IP Communicator, the Phone Services I installed is appeared on the screen.
Can anyone help me with this problem? Since I need the IP Blue Phone, cause it can be multiple used in one OS, not like the CIPC.
Thx =)
February 17th, 2009 at 7:35 am
mmmm_mmmm656,
1) Resizing your hard drive takes place in VMWare. You will need to shutdown the virtual machine. Then, delete the existing hard drive configured for the virtual machine and add a new 80GB+ IDE hard drive to the virtual machine.
2) I don’t know what you mean by “change the server” I do not see that in the post or any of the comments.

Josh, thanks for the vids!!! Been trying figure out how in the world I was going to be able to study for the lab portion but now you fixed that =)
Now the problem LOL!!
I get all the way through the installation to the Post Instal and I get the Critical Error below;

The System will now halt.
Try’s and do the whole import log to USB, which never works… and then nothing…
I am using 80G IDE HD, 1gig RAM, bridged nic
Using VMWare Server 2.0, since I can not get EasyVMX.com to give me a working *.VMX file to run on VMWare Player =/ Any recommendations?! Been doing this straight for the past two days and about to lose my mind!! lol
Oh and hope ya passed your lab!

Sorry about the test, Josh… You will get it soon enough! After I finish setting up my lab and my CCNP, I plan on hitting it pretty hard myself.

February 28th, 2009 at 9:28 am
Hi everyone,
I successfully installed CM Mngr on vmware-server 2.0 this weekend after much headahes & verbal expletives. The first problem was trying to get vmware to find the .iso & then after that the console would not start due to a kvm service running under /etc/init.d.. Once I stopped this I was able to run the install and follow Joshs video until…
“Security configuration failed (1)”.. I just didnt get why after following it to a ‘T’ it would not work. I deleted the VM and started again but noticed (luckily) a message under the boot process of the console regarding IP address conflict. I assumed that the CM uses the same IP as my virtual interface.. wrong! So I ran the install again changing the IP to resolve the conflict. Now my virtual interface (VMWare) IP is assigned as the DGWY for the CM. I have yet to test this via ping to my 3560-SW but I am sure it will work. I was also suprised to see I have 8 units authorised.. Cool.
I hope this helps all the people that were having probs with this annoying message and it has nothing to do with the passwords. Make sure you write all username/logins down so you know which is which, or it gets very confusing…
Lastly thanks Josh for another brilliant video!!
Peace

Josh and crew,
I was wondering if you or anyone can offer some insight to the issue I’m having. I wa able to use your video to successful install vmware running call manager 6.0. However my issue is on the host machine I can ping the vmware IP address and I can ssh from the host machine into the vmware machine and ping the host machine ip, the issue i’m having is I can’t seem to ping anything outside the host IP, unable to ping the default gateway as well.
Here are my config:
default gateway: 192.168.1.1
hostname machine (vista) 192.168.1.6
call manager 6.0 was assign 192.168.1.10
using 192.168.1.1 as it default gateway.
I’m getting a message unable to reach default gateway.
None of my other machine are able to reach the call manager IP address as well.
Any idea?

Is the vmware host using a ‘host-only’ vmware network or a ‘nat’ network within vmware??
Josh
March 12th, 2009 at 6:49 am
Hey Josh,
Thanks for quick response back. I’m still new vmware world, the way I have it set up was exactly to how you have it in the video. When I go into my vista machine I can see the two IP addresses that it assign for the two VMWARE interfaces. It is currently setup as bridging. When the call manger comes up, I can see an error indicating it can’t reach the default gateway.

March 23rd, 2009 at 8:43 am
May I make a suggestion with regards to CUCM 6.x.x in VMWare.
During the installation wizard process it asks for the IP address and default gateway for CUCM. If you just enter the D/G and not connect your pc up correctly it will throw up a message saying that the D/G cannot be contacted.
What I did was to virtually bridge the VMWare machine to my pc’s NIC. I gave my pc the D/G address (i.e. 10.0.0.1), then connect either a loopback lead (ethernet lead, cut short, can’t remember the exact pins you need to physically cross together), or connect a laptop/pc in the same subnet to the physical port. This then brings up your pc port i.e. CUCM’s default gateway. Now during the install CUCM can contact the D/G and everything continues as normal.
When you have installed the Publisher (1st node). Go to System > Server > Add New and add the IP address of your potential Subscriber that you wil be adding. Publisher needs to know that the Sub is on its way.
Sorry if many of you know this but at first I didn’t and finally was told on the job. Hopefully those starting out like me will find this usefull.
Best regards,
Dev.

Your problem is the AMD Processor. Call Manager 5/6/7 will not install in vmware if your physical hardware includes an AMD processor.

Josh: Thank you for the great series of articles. I wanted to relay my experiences of attempting to virtualize CUCMBE7 (coresident CallManager and Unity Connection). It was not an easy road!
To cut to the chase, the following hardware/VMware config worked for me:
- Dell OptiPlex 745 with a Pentium D processor, 4G RAM, 80G SATA drive, WinXP SP2.
- VMware Workstation 5.5.8 build 108000
- Virtual machine built within VMware workstation (ss opposed to using EasyVMX.com) specifying Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 80G IDE hard drive (which had to be created after the VM was built), 2048M RAM.
- During the CUCMBE installation, I specified a static address, subnet mask, default gateway, and DNS server.
I tried building the VMs on different pieces of hardware (Dell OptiPlex GX280 w/2G RAM, Dell Latitude D820 w/2G RAM, Dell OptiPlex 745 w/4G RAM) with different versions of VMware (VMware Workstation 5.5.3, VMware Workstation 5.5.8, VMware Player 1.0.2 and VMware Player 2.5.0 using VMX files created at the easyvmx.com web site). I also chose different versions of Linux when building the VMX file (Red Hat Enterprise Linux and generic Linux 2.x).
On a number of my unsuccessful attempts at installing the CUCMBE7 software in the VM, numerous times I encountered the “The installation has encountered an unrecoverable internal error.” message.
From what I witnessed, VMware Player 2.x needed to have a SCSI virtual hard drive configured for the VM, whereas VMware Player 1.x and WMware Workstation 5.x needed an IDE virtual hard drive.
When I used VMware Player 2.x, during the CUCMBE7 installation process, I received a Red Hat installation GUI at one point. After the GUI said it was ready to partition the disk, I received an error that stated the disk could not be partitioned. (The GUI only appeared when using VMware Player 2.x.)
The winning combo can be attributed to one or more of the following:
1- More physical RAM in the host machine (4G as opposed to 2G).
2- Assigning static IP information during the CUCMBE7 installation (all of the unsuccessful attempts were set for DHCP).
April 19th, 2009 at 6:41 am
Edwin,
Yes, you can run CUCM6. CUCM 5/6/7 are all based on Redhat Enterprise linux 3.

Kachi,
Is 192.168.1.1 reachable by the CUCM server? If not, set the default gateway to the same ip address as your CUCM server.
The installation checks to see if the default gateway is reachable (not sure why).
Josh
April 19th, 2009 at 6:47 am
Jvnieuwe,
I am not able to get to the ccmadmin page immediately after boot.
I think the webserver takes a little time to finish starting even after the console is at a login prompt.
It may also be that you do not have enough resources on the host PC.
Josh
April 19th, 2009 at 7:18 am
fouad,
Sorry for the delayed response.
Try this. Configure the ip address of the CUCM server and the default gateway with the same ip address…e.g. 192.168.1.10
During the install, the install script will check to see if it can reach the default gateway (basically, can it ping itself?), then it installs.
Josh
April 19th, 2009 at 7:20 am
pvr,
In my experience, you either need to wait longer for the webserver to finish loading or you simply do not have enough resources on your host pc for the virtual machine.
Josh
April 19th, 2009 at 7:25 am
Al,
Thank you very much for sharing your experience.
I definately agree with the 4G instead of 2G comment.

Josh,
Your video rocks. However I am having an issue. After clicking OK on the platform configuration at the end, I am getting prompted with a RedHat GUI interface, and after entering what keyboard and mouse I am using, I am being taken to the disk partition setup, and the two options are 1)automatic partition 2)Partition with Disk Druid. I have checked the earlier postings and haven’t found anyone else having this issue. I am using vmware player with 6.0.1.2000-4 image, on XP Home Edition machine, with 75GB space and 1024 MB RAM. Not sure what to do, as I am a newbie. Help will be much appreciated….
April 19th, 2009 at 3:43 pm
Vishal,
I have never heard of this…very strange. I would select ‘automatic partitioning’ and see what happens.

What hardware are you using on your host machine? I kept running into the GUI problem myself when I attempted to use a machine with an AMD processor.

Brent,
I tried installing on vmware server 1.0.6 build-91891 this time. Not getting prompted for Red Hat installation. After configuration, when installing Operating system package, it gets stuck at “there was an error installing python-2.2.3-6.4″ or “there was an error installing struts-1.1-3″. I am using XP Home Edition SP2 on host machine with Pentium 4. I tried installation with Red Hat Enterprise 3 and 4 unsuccessfully. Not sure if there is an issue with the iso image, as I dont get any errors extracting it. Any help will be much appreciated.

Josh – all
Can you please Help.
1. Does the install have to be on Red Hat Server Enterprise 3, will 4 work?
I am instaling from a 2.5GB iso, do i need to create a VM with the host redhat os installed first, or is it all bundelled into the iso?
2. After I complete the CUCM 6/7 install, the VM Linux box reboots, and i am greated with a command line Login, How do i Boot into Linux itself?
Any Help much appreciated!

I got CUCM installed and running fine, but having connectivity issues
My Setup: CUCM 6.0.1.2000-4
CUCM Virtual Machine: 192.168.1.200
CUCM Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
Desktop running VMWare: 192.168.1.101
The CUCM server can ping itself, but not the default gateway or anything else. I’ve seen others with this problem, but no solution…….????

I get “destination unreachable” when trying to ping any IP address from the CUCM server.
FYI, I set up the connection in bridged mode and everything else just like the video…any help would be great
June 23rd, 2009 at 3:01 pm
I figured out my problem. For those with the same problem; follow these steps:
1. Go to VMWare and click “Edit”
2. Go to “Virtual Network Settings”
3. Click “Host Virtual Network Mapping”
4. Specify the physical network adapter you want to use
Most likely VMWare is set to automatically choose the network adapter that is supposed to be bridged. If you have more than one like me(I had one physical adapter and several loopback adapters), then you need to specify the physical adapter.
This worked immediately for me, hopefully this helps someone.

hi
I am having problems installing it on vmware workstation and/or server.
My computer configuration
Dell Inspiron 6400 running windows vista
with C,D,E all as primary partitions
while installing CUCM on vmware i receive the error
Error Partitioning Could not allocate requested partitions: Partitioning failed: Could not allocate partitions as primary partitions
I reckon this is the problem with the number of primary partions not exceeding 4 but i wonder how this problem could be solved without data being lost and going into the complexity of partioning.
I don’t know if there are other reasons to the problem please help..

Muddassir,
That’s strange. I am not familiar with this error. Look through the other comments and make sure you have checked the areas other people have been having problems with. I have been meaning to update the post with common issues, but I just have not had the time.

Hi,
I got over the previous problem of partioning by changing Hard disk to IDE from SCCI and enabling 2 GB chunks.
However again i got stuck with another error message which says…
The installation has encountered a unrecoverable internal error. For further assistance report the following information to your support provider.

Hi
I used to have the same error “Security configuration failed (1)” when installing the CM, but I finally figured out why, check the following:
1. make sure the IP address for the CM is not in conflict with any other device. because the system will still boots up and seems normal.
2. the password chose for the database access must be at least 6 character long and using alphanumeric (check the help button for password guidelines)
Hope this help

Josh,
Great job having this site.
I’ve got CCM/Unity 7.0.1 now running.
I built a machine just for this and have no regrets.
Used:
BIOSTAR T41 HD G41, Intel E6300 (45nm), 4GB
Ubuntu 8.04 (VMware would not compile with 9.10)
VMware Server 2.0.2 (runs natively on 64 linux)
Upgrading now to 7.0.2 then 7.2.3 hopefully.
Good luck all in your studies.

Hi Josh!
Thanks for the video, it was very helpful!
I tried first to install CallManager (6.0.1) using VMware Player. The installation seemed to be good but when I booted the virtual machine, I got the prompt ‘localhost login’, as if I had not given a name to the machine during the installation process. And when I tried to log in, I got an error message and I could not log in. Then I removed the virtual machine and I tried again the installation twice, but always with the same result.
After that, I thought to install CallManager using VMware Server, and it worked fine.
So thank you very much for your tutorial.
I still have some questions. Is it possible to telnet to callmanager? If yes, how? Do you have some tutorials for the configuration (at least to make basic phone calls)?
Many thanks again.

Hi,
I am trying to install CUCM6.x on 7845H equivalent HP server (Dual 3.06GHz CPU, 4x72GB HDD, 4GB DRAM, Smart Array 5i Controller). The installation goes up to copying all files from the CD and after the reboot it crashed during the “Application Pre Install” phase. I am trying to figure out if this is due to incompatible hardware or a software error. If the hardware is not compatible would it fail right in the beginning? The message I get is –

I have successfully configured CUCM v7 Publisher using VMware server 2.0.2 and HP DL380 hardware with 2*3Ghz Processor, 6GB RAM and 6*72GB HD. However, the Subscriber installation fails somewhere at the Pre-Install process. My VMs are configured with 2*Processors, 2GB RAM, 100GB HD using IDE and using an iso for the install.
Error message encountered shows:

I can install CUCM 6.0 successful on VMWare player but there are some trouble with Cisco TSP on the client

I solved the problem, it’s due to Japanese locale setting on PC hosting TSP.
Guess bug of cryptography lib.

Colbi,
I have fixed this before by restarting tomcat service from the CLI, then try GUI again.
It’s something like “utils service restart Cisco Tomcat”

Norman,
Maybe try disabling CSA (cisco security agent) service from CLI, and increase RAM (if you can) from 2GB to 4GB (just for install).

Hi Josh
Thanks for the instructions. It has been very handy, and I have CUCM running now.
I am trying to register an IP Blue and a Cisco IP communicator to the CUCM to make calls
The two softphones are on different IPs. They both stall on registering to TFTP server which brings up the following questions:
Does a TFTP server install with CUCM or do I need to install this manually? If yes, how do I access the TFTP server to verify the settings, and if no, what TFTP server would you advise that can be downloaded
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

This worked immediately for me, hopefully this helps someone…….
Manten’s solution works perfectly. Its because VMware chooses the wrong adapter to map to (wireless adapter in my case). You could choose physical adapter as Mantel says or Loopback adapter would work too, as long as they’re in the same subnet.
For VMware server 2.0, don’t work on the web VI infrastracture. Go to start>all programs>vmware>vmware server>manage virtual networks.
Then click on a tab called “Automatic Bridging”, uncheck the check-box.
click on a tab called “Host Virtual Network Mapping” and under VMnet0 pull-down, select the ethernet adapter you want to use. Voila!! It should work

MD,
It sounds like you need to restart the tomcat service from the CLI.
utils service restart Cisco Tomcat
Josh
February 8th, 2010 at 10:44 pm
snipes,
You may need to be a little more patient. It sometimes takes almost 10 minutes for the Cisco Tomcat service to start on vmware host depending on other services, vmware vms and dynamips.
To check the ‘utils service list’ to check the status of the ‘Cisco Tomcat’ service.
Use ‘utils service restart Cisco Tomcat’ to restart the Tomcat webserver.

Hi All,
Thanks Josh, I successfully managed to install the CUCM 7 on VMWare.
I think the issue was with memory, with 2GB of memory the processes were not getting enough space and the VM memory was getting chocked up, I increased the memory to 3072 and tried. Now it is working pretty fine.
Thanks for your reply…and really a nice tool to gather the knowledge…

Hi Josh,
Excellent Post! Many thanks for the video.
I have sucessfully installed CUCM6.0.1 without any errors as per your instructions on VMware Workstation.
Here are my config parameters and I hope it helps the new one’s.
Physical Machine /Host Machine
Dell Inspiron “N” series Deskttop
1 CPU (Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.93 Ghz)
3 GB of RAM
OS: Windows XP SP2
VMWare Version : VMWare Workstation7 ( Trial Version)
Virtual Machine Options
OS Red Hat linux 3
Memory: 1024GB
Hard Disk 80GB SCSI (allocate all disk space). Even though the actual hard drive on which VM is config is only 48GB.
After the successful installation I did face a problem which i still couldn’t fix.
I cannot access the CCM admin page from the host machine using IE6.It takes lot of time to open and then shows “page cannot be displayed”.
When i tried from another machine using IE7 it opened but threw a certificates error but initial login page popped up.I think by default, Cisco Tomcat service doesn’t run on the CUCM because i had to start it (utils service start Cisco Tomcat) as it didn’t appear in the service list.
I logged into CCM admin page, started services and config a CIPC which works fine.
Do you have any ideas why i cannot open the CCMAdmin page in IE6 ?
Also, why did the certification error occurr – Error message is “There is a problem with this website’security certificate” in IE7 ?
Finally, How to check whether Cisco Tomcat is running or not. It doesn’t seen to appear in “utils service list” command.
Cheers,
Naresh

Hi Josh,
Thanks for staying strong with us all. I have a problem with the installation and unfortunately could not find a definite answer from previous posts. Error is “Network connectivity check failure” …..either ip address or gateway is wrong. Gateway not responding.
So my questions are:
1. How do we come about the ip-address
2. Is the IP address same as the local machine’s?
I am running same vmware release as in the video on a Vista 32bit machine. My home gateway is 192.168.11.1 with DHCP configured on the router.
Kindly advice.

With regards my earlier post, I am all good now. Did not bridge to an appropriate adapter and hence the network error.
CUCM7 is up and running with no issues configuring through the web interface.

After I logged in to the web interface, and tried to enable call manager service, I got the error message “update failed for the service: Cisco CallManager Allocated licenses consumed by used and pending. Please upload additional licenses (a new license file) and try again”.
Anybody know how to solve this problem? Thanks!

I installed CCM 6.1 in VMware worksation succesfully.
1_ I CAN ping CCM server.
2_ I CAN SSH CCM server.
3_ But when I tried to get web access, I succeed only one or two times, mostly I have no answer.
4_ I track with Wireshark and the problem is that the three TCP packets that try to establish session didn´t get response from the server.
5_ I also could see the packets arrived at the server with the option “UTILS NETWORK CAPTURE” but the server remains silent.
Any pice of help???
Thanks

Hi Josh,
your videos are wonderful.
i got a quick question.
its about ‘hardware requirments’ to run cm7 in vmware.
my issue..
i have an ibm x330 (old) server with PIII 1.4 Ghz (2 cpu) and 2 GB rams, 72 GB scsi HDD. OS Win2003 server SP1 and vmware server 1.04 edition.
I was able to install CM7 sucessfully on a vmware (vmware server version 1.04).
the black login page appears and i login successfully.
Now when i ping from my ‘other host – a laptop’ i can ping cm7. i tried to open web gui….after about 15 attempt it logged me in for 1 time. my gui session are very very very very slow……any guess why ???
does it look like a low end hardware issue on my old server.
by the way pings are always sucessful.
Any way around to resolve the issue without upgrade in hardware ???
ANYBODY WITH SAME ISSUE CAN ADVISE !!
thanks in advance.
Richard.

FORGOT TO MENTION:
ip for ibmserver(in winserver2003):10.0.0.20
gateway for ibmserver(in win3003): 10.0.0.1
ip for cm7 (in vmware): 10.0.0.40
g/w for cm7 10.0.0.1
used bridged networking.
ping works right and left — all the time.
10.0.0.1 is a netgear router (with access to internet).
please do help on this issue ….

Naresh,
Thank you for posting your experiences. I don’t use IE at all, so I am not going to be much help there … especially with IE6.
In regards to Tomcat…it takes a while for it to load. Sometimes, it just takes a little patience (or a lot) for it to load.
The certificate error you are seeing in IE7 is normal.

Matthews,
Sorry to tell you buddy but CUCM 5.x did not include demo licenses as versions 6.x, 7.x and 8.x do.
See if you can get one of these later releases.

If you are setting the virtual machine up with a “bridged” network connection, you will need to give the server an ip address in the same range as your local area network. For example, if you are using 192.168.11.0/24, and you know 192.168.1.55 is open, you can assign that ip address to the cucm server.
Then you can configure the default gateway as the router on your local area network (192.168.11.1) or you can even trick the system and use the same ip address as the gateway if you do not have a router.
The installation tries to make sure the gateway is alive before continuing. By setting the gateway as the server’s ip address, the ping comes back successful and the installation continues.
+–
|
| 2. Is the IP address same as the local

No, you do not want to give it the same address as the vmware server.

parfait,
You will need to connect to the IP address of the CUCM server. Not the local machine. In CCM 3.x-4.x, you would RDP into the CCM server and http to the localhost. There isn’t a way to RDP into the new CUCM appliance.
Example:
http://192.168.1.10/ccmadmin

This is because you have used up all the demo licenses or you have installed version 5.x and it doesn’t have demo licenses.

Rodrigo,
It sounds like you are trying to access the server before the Tomcat (webserver) has had time to start or Tomcat has crashed.
Try issuing this command from the CLI
‘utils service restart Cisco Tomcat’
or restart the server.

Richard,
Unfortunately, you simply do not have enough resources. Any server with a PIII is going to be pretty sluggish.
You need to buy a bigger machine. I know that is not what you wanted to hear. Sorry.

Thank you very much for so great job.
Recently, I set up a vmware+cucm6 on my windows7. It is successful. I can access the cucm by the IE browser on my windows7. However, I failed to access the CUCM from a neighbor winXP. I have turned off the firewall of windows 7.
What cause this problem? Thanks a lot.

Hi all, I have installed ccm7 successfully on vmware server 2.0.1. I had problems with invalid password. From my experience don’t use complex password (e.g @,# etc), just use letters and numbers.
To reset your application password log on to CLI and use utils command.
Best of luck to all.

for all the people having issues with installation, i suggest you give it a try using virtualbox (free) instead.
just make sure that once you created your virtual machine you do this hack before installing CUCM:

it worked for me where vmware failed misserably

Hello All,
After installing more than 10 times I finally succeeded.Everytime I was getting an error Login Host : login failed.
Everytime I did correctly but this error made me sick. Finally after visiting many many forums I realized that in VMware workstation 7 the easy install which ask for a username and password initially before creating the virtual machine was the main cause of this. I created the Virtual machine without installing the OS and then I installed the OS. Doing this it disables the Easy install and then I was able to installed it. Thank you very much Josh for this wonderful video. Can I also request you to just mention what all can be done on this virtual machine software ?
Many Thanks in advance .

Hi Josh, Hi everybody,
I built an home lab and i have a strange problem registering Cisco IP Communicator with CUCM v8 on VMWARE. Here the trouble:
I have 2 PCs connected to one switch via FastEthernet ports.
On first PC i installed CUCM 8 on VMWARE end installation was successfull.
On VMWare i configured:
- Network Adapter=Bridged
On PC with VMWARE:
- the FastEthernet is configured with ip address in the same subnet as CUCM.
With this setting i can log into web CUCM and configure it.
On second PC i installed Cisco IP Communicator and configured FastEthernet port with DHCP enabled. CUCM is configured to be DHCP server and it supplies ip address to IP Communicator successfully. But the phone do not register:
From CUCM to IP Communicator ping seems OK.
From IP Communicator to CUCM ping do not work.
Anyway i can solve the problem with this settings:
On VMWare i configure Network Adapter= VMNet0(auto-bridging) and on VMware Network Adapter VMnet1 configure the same ip address as CUCM.
Now IP Communicator register with CUCM but i cannot access to web CUCM anymore.
How can i solve this?
every suggest is appreciated.

I have had exactly the same problem with the login to the CUCM once installed. It was not accepting the credentials entered durign the installation. I have reinstalled the box couple time but without any success.
Finally I have tried to install it to 80Gig drive, and voila – I am able to login the CUCM and localhost is no more displayed under CLI.

Can anyone advise me how can I web into this using on of the Virtual Machine in VMWARE. And what should be ethernet settings in VMWARE.
Thanks,

April 18th, 2011 at 1:35 pm
Hi Pranav,
i’ll show you an example:
- during installation i entered these settings for my CUCM:
IP Address: 192.168.10.6
Mask: 255.255.255.0
- after installation on VMWARE:
Network adapter = Custom (VMNet1-host only).
Under connections set VMware Network Adapter VMnet1 with
IP Address: 192.168.10.10
Mask: 255.255.255.0
That is an address in the same subnet as CUCM
- open a web browser and enter:
192.168.10.6
should be work..
bye

Hi,
for successfull installation of CUCM 6 (6.0.1.2000-4) in VMware (and no login issues), avoid quick install method in VMware 7. Configure a new VMachine (RedHatEntriprise3) and choose i will Install the OS later. The disk size is not an issue (at least in my case to be >= 80G in order to work). As soon as the VMachine is ready , the next step is to use CD/DVD or the .iso fle to install CUCM. The whole process takes about 40-45 minutes (depending on memory applied). Then setup installion is done correctly (following the steps described) and login can be done at cli and via http. The quick install method in VMware 7 does not result in correct installation for some reason (appache is not installed for web access , network settings are not applied [ip address, hostname, etc] no user accounts are created (nothing on /etc/shadow), etc, as you can login wth root/cisco and check what is missing – however havent found something useful so to run from there…../etc/opt/cisco ???
Great video and help Josh.

November 13th, 2011 at 7:51 am
Rana,
I was having these same problems and have been successful by creating the VM first (do not install the CUCM image), once the vm has been created, go into settings and make sure your hard drive is IDE, at least 80 GB, and use bridged networking (replicate physical network connection). Then under the CD drive, choose the location where your ISO is. Then power on the machine. This worked for me. It seems that if you go through the VmWare initial install tasks, where it asks you for a username/password, it somehow breaks the install, so to bypass this I had to create the VM first. With this method, VmWare doesn’t ask for that initial user/pass information.
