How to install Call Manager 6.x in VMWare
Posted by Josh under Cisco , Cisco VOIP , virtualization -In a previous tutorial, you learned how to install Call Manager 4.x in vmware. Installing CUCM 6.x in VMWare is much easier. Cisco did a great job with CUCM 6.x in terms of allowing you to install the software in a virtual machine without needing to hack the system.
There are not really any tricks to installing Cisco Communications Manager 6.x in VMWare. I have used vmware player with easyvmx.com as well as VMWare Server.
Here are the basic steps:
- Create a virtual machine with your favorite VMWare Product
- Configure the virtual machine with enough disk space and RAM to meet CUCM installation requirements
- Insert your CUCM 6.x installation CD
- Complete the Installation Wizard
- Wait for the install to complete
Check out Cisco Call Manager books at Amazon.com.

Obvious question: Where can one get the CUCM ISO?
March 21st, 2008 at 7:46 am
If you have the CDs, you can create an ISO from the CDs with LC ISOCreator
If you do not have the CDs, you might search the following websites

Hi Josh,
G-R-E-A-T Video. Serves the need for N-O-W!!!
Anyways, I tried to install it on VMWare Player on a Ubuntu Host without any luck. So I had to settle for VMWare Player on an XP Host.
Any reason why the Ubuntu install didn’t work?

Ayo,
If you are using a Linux Machine (Server or Desktop), I highly recommend VMWare Server 1.X. That is what I used for this video. The vmware server was on a Linux Box, but I was using the server client on my windows box.
I tried VMWare Server 2.X Beta … I am not real impressed … yet. I am sure they will make it a great product though. They always do.

I’ve got such a daft problem!
After following the procedure perfectly, I get to the localhost login: prompt and it will not accept my login or password specified during setup.
Which username and password pair does cucm use for initial login?
Im using v6.0.1.2000-4
thanks in advance!

Ibraheem,
There are not any other steps. You may have a little confusion regarding the vmware interface used. Make sure you are using the bridged interface.

Phill,
It slips my mind, but it is configured during the installation. Either you configure the username or it is ccmadministrator.
I will look through some documentation and post another comment.

Ibrahim,
Try connecting to the local console. I only connected with the ip address and port number because I have a Linux VMWare server and I was connecting to it from my windows VMWare client.

I just finished upgrading our CM4.2(3)a to 6.1.1000 in a VMware environment. Unfortunatley all licences are lost (usually you should have 50 licences for free after install). Now i was able to get a valid licence file but the MAC addresses dont fit together. Does anyone know how to change the MAC addresses of the VM with VMware Server1.0.5? Or maybe there is a way to change it in the CUCM6.1?
April 29th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
DrM,
I have not been able to find a way to do this. I tried to figure it out with CUCM 5.x but was unsuccessful. Hopefully someone else has been able to do this.
Josh
May 5th, 2008 at 12:48 am
I was successful in changing the MAC address! lol
I did not patch VMware itself, i just hacked into the CUCM6 with a Linux LiveCD and spoofed the MAC with Linux (CUCM6 is based on a RedHat linux system) internal tools.
After that i was able to activate it with the lic file i had.
This should actually work for all kind of CUCM5+6 installations.

Hi all,
I have CuCm 6.0.1 Business Edition up and going on an IBM Netserver 5500 M20 under VMware Server, it installed fine BUT its VERY VERY VERY slow - any suggestions, my hardware is a triple PIII with 2gb RAM - suppose I need more RAM but its expensive and the max is 4gb. Will spend the money if it will help!
Any comments ?
Thanks

Hi all,
I am having same issue as Dan. I get message “uncompressing Linux… Ok, booting the kernel” and the VM restarts. and same as Dan its a continious loop. I am using Vmware server 1.0.5 the VM is Redhat enterprise 3, with 80GB IDE HDD, 1GB RAM. Is it a hardware issue?
Josh, you have done a great job helping people setting up CCM. Can you please help us to resolve this issue.
Thanks in advance
May 19th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
@Chaachoo, Unfortunately, I have not ran into this issue yet. If anyone is willing to share a desktop with Logmein (or something similar), I would like to help fix it. - Josh
May 26th, 2008 at 1:02 am
Thanks Josh.
While trying to get more info on the issue I went through RedHat website, which describes same kind of problem that relates to SMP kernel. Can you please confirm CCM 6 uses SMP kernel or UP kernel.
I have uni-processor machine and some ppl had problem running RedHat on UP. They need to change the Grub. However in this case CCM only has one Grub entry.
I am in middle of my Uni exams. Once finish I’ll try using linux recovery CD to change Grub. Will also setup RDP to my desktop for Josh.
Regards,
Chaachoo
May 26th, 2008 at 6:43 pm
I solved the looping issue. I downloaded the super grub iso, booted the vmware from it and it fixed to boot partition (not sure of the lingo as i’m not a Linux guy).
Just google ’super grub’.
Cheers

How do you perform a clean shutdown of Redhat through VMWare??
May 27th, 2008 at 4:16 am
Hallo DrM!
I’d like to change the MAC-Adress on my CUCM-machine with a linux live-CD.
Can you give me some infos how to do it?
thank you
May 28th, 2008 at 2:52 am
To be honest, i did not do it by myself. I am not one of these linux guys. Actually a colleague did the changes. As i said, we booted up the VM with a KnoppixLinuxLiveCD and then he mounted the disk where CUCM6 was installed on. With some hacking he was successful in adding a “ifconfig” command in one of the first scripts which get started during the CUCM bootup. For a linux guy this should be sufficient, for all others (like me) it is magic anyway.

Hello guys,
Thanks Tomique
So finally i was successfull to install CUCM6 on VMware. Problem was in iso DVD. When i tried to make installation with CUCM DVD obtained directly from “Cisco guy” everything run properly. But I have one problem during initial configuration. When i check services center-feature service in Cisco Serviceability the Service “Call Manager” always goes to “not running” status, active status is activated. I already tried to turn off and on service, but service after few seconds switch to not running mode and i have no idea why ? If anybody have any suggestion, please share it with us or me
June 4th, 2008 at 5:25 am
@Tomiqe34
This sounds like a licence problem. Did you do a (naked) standard installation or upgrade?
A basic installation gives you 50 licences for testing purpose. For upgrade you need to get official licence files.
June 5th, 2008 at 9:33 am
Hi DrM,
so i dont know, where was an problem… But the “new problem” came
Yes, i did a naked installation not upgrade. I know that Cisco provides an “starting DLU´s” (Data license units) in CUCM 6.0. I made a brand new installation of CM6 and service “CallManager” is uptime yet
When i want to add an Cisco IP Communicator or any Cisco SCCP IP Phone to VMWare CM on display during start appear follows: “Register Rejected:Error DBConfig”..I have read on some forum, that problem is with wrong configuration of IP Phones in CM, problem with database etc. But Im not able to find a problem yet because the “IP Phones adding procedure in CM passed without problems”… Any suggestions ? Thanks a lot

Hi to the author Mr. Josh,
Thank you very for such a wonderful and knoledgable videos, you have shared and available on annonymous people wanted to learn, Mr. Josh, can i ask were i or we can obtain the CUCM license? cause i got now license for free demo
once again thank you very much
June 5th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
I mean I got no license for a free demo, as you have in the video, where can we have it, i appreciate your possitive advice…
June 6th, 2008 at 7:40 am
@Johnathan - What version of CCM do you have installed? If it is 6.X, you will not need to upload license files, they are included. You may need to start the Call Manager Service via the Call Manager Serviceability page before it is usable. If it is 5.x, you will need to obtain a license file from Cisco. - Josh
June 15th, 2008 at 12:37 pm
Anyone installed CUCM6.x with ESX 2.5.x? I tried using the vxnet NIC but the OS didn’t recognize it so I switched to VMLANCE which it did find.
I installed CUCMBE and it installed fine but I can’t log into the console, I even installed it twice and wrote down the user/pass and still can’t login…any ideas?
June 19th, 2008 at 3:15 pm
Is there anyway to reset the CCMAdministrator password from the command line?
June 19th, 2008 at 8:22 pm
Ok I was able to successfully install CUCMBE but I now get a GRUB error 17..any idead? my partition is 80GB.
June 20th, 2008 at 8:27 pm
Fixed it with this:
Grub error
After installation phase 1, the system reboots and you’ll probably get the following error:
GRUB Loading stage1.5.
GRUB loading, please wait…
Error 17
Don’t panic. It’s a known bug for GRUB. To fix it, you need a Linux bootable CD. I use RedHat Linux as example.
Step 1. Edit VM settings, so the CD-ROM pointing to RedHat installation CD 1.
Step 2. Start VM and have it boot from CD-ROM. I your VM was created with BusLogic SCSI, you need to manually install the driver. (That’s why I suggest LSI if you’re going to use RedHat CD)
Step 3. On the boot prompt, type ‘linux rescue’
Step 4. Follow the screen instructions to setup keyboard, language. You don’t need to setup network connection.
Step 5. On commad prompt, type ‘chroot /mnt/sysimage’, Enter.
Step 6. type ‘grub’, Enter
Step 7. type ‘root (hd0,0)’, Enter
Step 8. type ’setup (hd0)’, Enter
Step 9. type ‘quit’, Enter
Step 10. type ‘exit’, Enter (type ‘exit’, Enter, again, if the system didn’t reboot)

I also have Callmanager 6.1.1 running on VMware server. The only problem I have is poor qudio streaming quality from the CallManager (e.g. with MoH, dialing an unreachable number). Has anybody experienced this and knows a solution? The poor audio quality wont do me a favor while demonstrating it to a customer icon_wink.gif Otherwise it seems to function normally, almost like the real thing.
Would be grateful for any replies! Maybe I’m doing something wrong?!?! icon_razz.gif
My VMware is configured with:
- running on Windows 2003 server x64, Hardware: AMD X2 4600+, 4GB RAM
- CM6 on Linux Red Hat Enterprise 3
- 2GB RAM
- 40GB HDD allocated (could this be the cause??)
- bridged network

@Chuck,
Use the ’set password admin’ command from the CLI to change the administrator password. This is the password used for web and CLI access.
Use the ’set password security’ command to change the password authenticating communications between servers.

@copacetic,
I have experienced the same thing. However, I am not using it to Demo for customers, so I have never cared. This sparks my interest though. I will look around to see if I can find a solution.

Jack & Bruno,
I need to figure out a way to get the installation log from the server. I haven’t ever worked on a failed install before.
Can you both give me more information? What version of VMWare? The physical hardware…what version of Java do you have on your desktop?
Josh
June 24th, 2008 at 11:47 am
Hi Josh,
sure.
Version 1.0.5 build 80187 for VMWare.
40GB HDD and 1024MB for virtual proposes.
Java Runtime Environment 6.
I am behind a proxy…
When I open a blank page and put 10.11.7.83 (my address CUCM) it appears the begin page.
But, when I click in the !Cisco Unified Communications Manager Administration! the page is not opening…
Strange.
Thank you!
Regards,
Bruno.
June 24th, 2008 at 11:33 pm
Bruno,
I would bet the problem is the proxy server. If the CUCM server is local, I would change the proxy settings to bypass the proxy when communicating with 10.11.7.83.
If it is not possible to access the CUCM server without going through a proxy … you are in a tough spot.
If you do not have rights to change proxy settings, you might download PortableFirefox and try to access it without proxy the proxy settings.

Hi Josh,
Here is the configuration:
Windows XP
VMWare Server Ver. 1.0.6 Build-91891
30 GB HDD and 2G RAM
not behind the firewall or proxy server
Thanks

Hi Josh,
problem solved.
It should be applied an exception in the proxy server for the IP address used 10.11.7.83.
It´s done!
Thank you for the good stuff.

I have installed CCM6 on VMware and find it very odd but when i inquire my licenses i have 10 000 licenses available - I have read arround and if i remember i had only 50 on previously installed systems. any idea which file contains the license so i dont have to waist 20 gig
July 2nd, 2008 at 4:22 pm
Excellent presentation Josh! One item to share that for others is to make sure that the Call Mgr instance in VM has access to a DNS server, and that foward and reverse entries exist for the hostname or else the install will balk.
July 6th, 2008 at 1:40 pm
I followed the video, however the installation fails right after i click “no” to check media. If I click “yes” it states the media failed. Any ideas?
thanks
July 7th, 2008 at 7:44 am
@pete …. bad media?
July 7th, 2008 at 8:07 am
@oracll3 - I am not sure. You could boot the server in ‘linux rescue’ mode from a redhat disk or follow this tutorial get a bash shell.
Once you have shell access, you could type the following to possibly find the license files….if they are held in the file system.
[server1]#find / | grep “\.lic”

@sampath and @khalil,

Can either of you connect to the server with the Real-Time Monitoring Tool, collect the logs and send them to me?

Hi all,
i know that this article is just about installing on VMware but i have call manager 6 and i want to install it on HP G3 ML350 Server . it gives me hardware not supported on the installtion window.
I know that my hardware is not on the Cisco list but is there anyway to bypass this checkup just like we did in the Call manager version 4 to be able to install it on VMware ?
